Ah, that could be part of the problem why I've had such little luck trying to find this out on and off over the past several months: maybe many other displays don't give that info either. Now that you mention it, my display is also fairly limited in what tech info it displays for an HDMI signal, but it does show the format and number of color bits of the input signal.I mentioned a couple times on HTF that I was pleased the studio put all their 480p extras on DVD rather than on the feature BD, so that I could upscale them in the player. I never got any comments to the remarks, so I presumed people either agreed, or didn't know what the hell I was talking about...
But you have given me a good idea: I will ask in the AVS thread for my particular display (why didn't I think of that before??). Surely those people will know that the Pio 151 upscaler isn't that good and will have taken remedial action.
Edit: I am assured by some people on AVS that the BDP-83 does what I'm asking about. One more reason to get an 83...

I just got the Oppo a couple of days ago. It is *noticeably* better than my Sharp BD player. I modded it for all region playing so I now have one less box under my TV. I haven't really had a chance to play with it very much yet.

The 83 finally arrived today. Crap, I forgot my HT router already has all the ports used...Edit: this upscaling of non-1080p BD material with the BDP-83 has vastly improved my viewing experience. What is shocking is that some of the upscaled BD 480p film clips in docs look better than the same part in the 1080p movie did IMO. I have often noticed that in the old days of (non-upscaled) DVD though too, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. I guess the docs get different color-timing and processing etc., and are probably not tuned to the movie director's etc. taste which may make them more to my taste.
Still can't figure out the reasoning for why the PS3 doesn't do this.
