Sorry, can't offer anything except my sympathy. Is it like "they say", they don't make them like they used to? 6 years seems pretty short, but what can one do.
My 27" CRT Hitachi still has a perfect picture to this day, and it's around 19 years old! My 12 year old Sony 35" CRT, 100% perfect, the RCA 27" CRT my wife brought in, 100% perfect (not a good TV in the first place IMO, but...) and around 12 years old also.
I'm pretty much waiting for one to die so I have a reason to get something bigger/nicer for our sunroom to replace the Hitachi (me, not my wife, she'd rather I just put a crowbar in my wallet and spend the money). :)

Try a Blu Ray plus the HD TV of your choice, there's no going back.

I can't really disagree, but I'm not really much of a videophile TBH. The 35" is in our BR and is more than fine for that application to my eyes (built it into a cove in the wall, so it takes no space either).
One day my old X1 PJ bulb will die (110" non HD) and I'll get to replace that with an HD unit as well, but until it does I'm fine. The picture down in my room (BD player) is pretty great IMO.
