Seriously, it's not a good idea. But if you are that constrained in what you can do, my advice was simple, to the point and easily doable.
Or you can just put the display directly on top of the speakers and say "Fuck it, that's what I wanted to do anyway!".

I appreciate your replies...
Basically the TV sits on a desk in my small living room and I only have about 8-10" on either side of the tv for speakers. I don't want to mess with wall mount.
The other possibility is to find a platform for the TV base so I can get it another 12" clearance and then put speakers underneath that, on their sides.
Any suggestions?
This is a two-channel setup which I'd like to be decent enough to listen to music on as well. Currently thing original advents and a NAD receiver, but could also get some smaller speakers...
The 42" plasma in our bedroom doesn't have the best speaker sound. So what I did was send the RCA audio out (there are other options that will work) to a sub/sat system that improves on the audio from what the plasma offered. This one can be found for <$140 delivered from a few online vendors. You may be able to find it local (when I got it, Best Buy and Circuit City were selling them) to see if it would suit your needs. I actually own two of these systems: one in the bedroom for the plasma and one in the office for the desktop computer. The L/R speakers can go on the sides of the display and the bass unit can be put on the floor.
