I've used a Samsung BP1600 since April with no mechanical problems. There have been some software glitches that new firmware downloads have corrected. Mine is hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV so that probably helps with compatibility by lowering "handshake" troubles. I paid $249 at that time and paid $80 for a wireless network thingie (dongle?). It streams Netflix, Pandora, Youtube and Blockbuster. I'm happy with it. I've spent 10x as much on high end equipment that had more problems. I think you have to be cautious about how you research reliability issues of mass produced equipment on forums like the AVS Forum. Most people are drawn there to solve their equipment problems, so that stacks the deck. You may want to check out the versions of the Samsung 1600 that are higher as they will come with the wireless adapter installed and the price may be better at this point. Bottomline: there may be other brands that are more reliable in the long run--I don't know--but I'm happy for now. Get an extended warranty if you are nervous.
Follow Ups:
It was actually CNET where I read the reliability reviews of the samsung.
I haven't had good look with DVD players in the past. I've had three <$100 models that crapped out after a year, or maybe less. I now have a Pioneer I paid $100 for that has been reliable and I also like the features. So, I'm a bit cautious.
