With laserdiscs, under $40 was cheap for a new one; under $20 cheap for a used one. I paid a lot more for one particular Criterion Collection movie.
DVDs often cost over $30 in the early years. You can still spend over $20 on a new release, but I'm guessing most of us are willing to wait, or just rent those titles.
What annoys me more about Blu-ray is the inconsistent quality; some are only minor improvements on the DVD version. I'm very reluctant to buy any disc that's encoded in MPEG2, especially if it's only a single-layer (25G) disc. At least the sound is almost always better than the DVD.
If you're waiting for some particular older titles to come down in price, don't forget there's a risk they'll go out of print. Plenty of DVDs have. So, if it's a core movie for your collection, just buy it and encourage the publisher and retailer.
