It could be a settings issue. I suspect, unfortunately, a lot of people like eye popping colors and the "Soap Opera" effect seems a likely result with typical settings. Get yourself a Plasma instead...

Yes, some people whose friends :) have convinced them to get a plasma for their new TV, to replace an LCD, do complain that they're not eyeball-burning enough. I have the brightness (among other things) turned way down on my plasma and it still lights up the whole room on some scenes. Admittedly it's pretty lame for daylight viewing, which I never do, so that explains the "soap opera" thing...
