I mistakenly put hours into editing some AVI home video via Windows Movie Maker. Unfortunately, the result is in .WMV format and my home DVD to TV players cannot read that format. I tried converting that with a free program to MPEG format, but the DVD player wouldn't read that either!
Can anyone recommend a free downloadable converter for this purpose? I really don't want to have to re-edit the whole damn thing again!
Thanks.

To be a "real" DVD, the video must be MPEG2, and "authored" so the video is in .VOB files accompanied by appropriate .ifo files. You probably got some kind of authoring software when you bought a computer or DVD writer. The authoring program should let you add menus, and give a choice of output... disc image, VIDEO_TS folder, or write to disc. I'd suggest creating the VIDEO_TS folder, and using Imgburn to write.
You said that "I tried converting that with a free program to MPEG format, but the DVD player wouldn't read that either!" . Are you sure that the DVD player you are using is compatible with the DVD format (+R or -R) that you are burning? Some DVD players won't read +R and some won't read -R. If you're burning to an incompatible DVD format, that may be the problem. Most DVD players made today will read either format, but you didn't say what DVD player you were using. You may want to try the DVD you created on one or two other players, just to be sure.
If you're using +R discs, there's a way to set the "book-type/bit-setting" to -ROM and the disc will look like a regular movie DVD to the DVD player. If you're using -R and your DVD player isn't compatible, there's nothing you can do to get around the incompatibility.
