I switched out the HDMI cable between DVR source and the monoprice HDMI switch with the recommended 24awg >4 foot minimal length cable, and it now works perfectly with no dropouts. This has turned out to be an affordable and effective HDMI switch that passes 1080p.

The first output port, at least, is auto-switching and that requires sensing a change in the load. The circuit, therefore, must be very sensitive to load.
I do not like auto-switching, personally, because all of my sources are usually on anyway.
