Flat panels do this, sometimes regularly. Turn off all power to the set, leave off for a few seconds, then turn power back on. The TV will often start up normally on its own after this without pressing anything on the remote.
The apparent permanent fix on my Panasonic LCD was to go to the setup menu and change the power setting mode from "normal" to "energy saving". This puts the TV in the mode of a computer doing a cold start rather than a warm start every time it is turned on.
You know how computers sometimes dont want to do a startup from Sleep or hibernate mode, and insist on doing a full restart. Same deal on TV sets.
