What kind of weather do you have? I live in central California, and have only had two episodes where we lost the picture. Both were during heavy downpours (yellow/red on weather channel radar), which is fairly rare for us. HD is very good.
Follow Ups:
I live in the New Orleans area so we do experience a lot of stormy weather (you may have heard about it). Dropouts are definitely a real possibility here and I have had some last for the better part of 30 minutes (not often). But, I've been with them since '96 and for many of those years carried cable service simultaneously to fall back on as a "spare tire" during rain fade episodes. Last year, the basic cable package went north of $300 annually causing me to re-evaluate so now I am soldiering on with just Dish.
Picture quality on cable subpar compared to Dish. During peak hours, service calls can involve waits up to 20 minutes but the tech help is competent and intelligible. Overall, more upside than downside.
Oh, and back to the "stormy weather"...my house sits about 30 miles west of where Katrina's eye came ashore and when I finally was able to get back to the house, my Dish was still intact on the chimney and didn't so much as have to be reaimed. However, I found a second dish down in the garden that frisbeed in from parts unknown and have never figured out where it sailed in from.
Oh, yes, I know that weather. I grew up in the Beaumont, Texas area. We have very similar weather there that you have in N.O. Of course, when I grew up no such thing as Dish was available (I remember Sputnik!). But I am familiar with that weather! Love California weather, but you have to put up with Ca politics and crazy people...but almost no mosquitoes either...
