Get a Panasonic plasma, and you will wonder why you didn't toss it years ago. There are several Panasonic 50" plasmas available for less than $1k, and even the cheapest 720 set will outperform the old dinosaur by a large margin.

the Sony is history. To be replaced by a Panasonic plasma. Either the 1080P 42" Viera or
the 720P 50" Viera. Costco has both priced at a hair under $700.
Unless you're sitting 6 feet or less from the screen, 42" 1080p might be a waste. I had one for a while at about 7 feet distance and eventually went to a 50". From the standpoint of color gamut 1080p in a 42" does make a difference, but much of the detail at that size you won't notice.
