You can find reasonably priced HDMI-to-DVI cables at monoprice.com (see below). As for sound, most cable boxes, DVD players and Blu-ray players can output analog audio, if you need it, or digital via optical/coax if you want to send digital to a DAC (for just stereo) or a Home Theater receiver. Of course, you can always go HDMI to a Home Theater receiver and then HDMI-to-DVI to the projector.
compatibility/support:
DVI-A = analog signal only
DVI-D = digital signal only
DVI-I = analog and digital signals
The cables in the link below will work. The DVI side is digital only DVI-D, which your friend's projector will support.
