I have a couple bluray players -- a Samsung BD-1600 and a Panasonic BD-85. The bluray playback for these machines is fine, with the Panny being a bit better than the Samsung.
To my suprise, the Samsung is not very good at standard DVD playback. The PQ is below an average DVD player. My Oppo DV-980 is much better at standard DVD playback than the Samsung.
I was planning on modding all three players, but I doubt I will bother with the Samsung.

In my experience, while there is some difference between Blu-ray discs on different machines, the biggest difference is how they handle DVDs. Bargain BD players don't seem to upscale DVDs all that well. That and the fact that they tend to self destruct. I had an early Samsung, I don't remember the model #, but it was a POS.

These are both older model players, aren't they? I have two BluRay players (Pioneer BDP-3200 and a Samsung 6500). Both do an excellent job at upsampling DVDs (as well as playing BluRays). Either of them does a better job at upsampling DVDs (the Samsung has a little too much edge enhancement going on for some tastes) than my Denon DVD-3109 player, which cost 9 or 10 times more than either of my BluRay players and got laudatory reviews for its upsampling when it came out. Times have changed!
