Denon AVR-1712
It has audio delay up to 300ms, HDMI sync mode and HDMI Standby pass-thru (allows you to use an HDMI device with the TV via the receiver without turning the receiver on). It fits your budget of $399, gives you plenty of control/convenience and offers numerous options should you want to get more into Home Theater. Don't worry that it's a 7.1 model, as you just tell it that you're only using 3.1 of those channels.

Thanks Joe - That 1712 seems like a great buy, in terms of capabilities and future proofing.
I read the manual and it seems flexible enough for any eventualities.
Though I think the recommended installation of 12" in every side is overkill!
Thanks!
