27" Hitachi CRT in 1990: $990
37" RCA LCD in 2012: $298
.
Not to put a curse on your new stuff, but, there's a reason why stuff appears to be cheaper these days: It doesn't last as long. The "build quality" isn't there.
Your Hitachi went 22 years and is still kicking. I'll give the RCA 7 years, tops, before it's got a major issue, worthy of replacing it.
Price is one thing, cost is another.
They don't make 'em like they used to! (I can't believe I'm saying that about '90s stuff. I was saying that in 1990!)

I bought a brand new washer 17 months ago. Monday the repairman told me it wasn't worth fixing (money out of his pocket), and even if I'm anti-extended warranty, to get one on pretty much any new laundry appliances. Income tax came in the same day believe it or not for $918, washer and warranty; $928. Great it came in, but it would have been nice to do something enjoyable for just short of $1K.
