I would suggest one of the following 2012 Panasonic Plasmas:

TC-P55ST50 55", retail $1,700 [before discounts]
TC-P50ST50 50", retail $1,400 [before discounts]

If they can't swing the ST series then take a look at the UT series:

TC-P42UT50 42", retail $799
TC-P50UT50 50", retail $1,099
TC-P55UT50 55", retail $1,399

I personally would not buy the extended warranty but that's their decision.

Consumer Reports says that flat panel TV reliability has been very good overall, better than the old CRT sets. I never buy extended warranties, and so far at least, I have had no problems with any of my flat panels. I love my Panasonic Plasma.
