I bought Walmart's "Seiki" BD660, which occasionally goes on sale for $48, but the regular price is $78. It can be made region-free for DVD and the Blu-ray region can be changed at will. It plays mkv and avi video files off discs or USB drives; audio seems to be limited to mp3 (definitely not flac). Tragically, the USB port is inconveniently located on the back panel.
I've got no complaints about its Blu-ray or upscaled DVD playback, but I only have a 720p TV and pre-HDMI receiver. It has a single-frame forward button, but no single-frame reverse ability. It's certainly good enough for casual use, and enormously better than a blank screen if you need to watch foreign DVDs or Blu-rays.
