OLD model Tivos were great - you could use them just like a VCR without a subscription.

Now? Why isn't there a decent & simple hard drive based recording system that is "advanced" enough to do what a $100 VCR could manage 20 years ago?

I just did a quick search on Best Buy's site and found 2 DVR's (both disc based, one is a VCR/DVD recorder combo).
I do find it more strange that he doesn't have cable but wants to record shows. :)
