I found a DirecTV DVR HR24-500 and its remote. Can I use this without DirecTV serivce? Apparently the older models didn't require activation.
I want to use it only with an over the air antenna signal going in to record the broadcasts on the DVR as I still do with a VCR. Possible?
Can't just test it because there was no power cord. If it might work for my intended use then I assume I can get a power cord - it has a different connector than usual IEC cords we use in audio do....
Obviously I am over the air only. I'd like to avoid integrating my net access and my TV for now, if that affects any answer you might have.
Follow Ups:
It has to be remotely authorized by DirecTv and requires a mated card that is married to the DVR.

the iview 3500stb will allow you to record off-air programs ans store to a usb devise such as a hard disk or flash drive. Its $39 and you dont have to mess with Direct TV. See lengthier discussions below. From there you could burn to a DVD on most any laptop computer.
A few companies (such as Toshiba DVR)430 still sell DVRS That write DVDs for about $100 but those with digital tuners are getting tough to find in which case you still need a digital tuner such as the iview, Check Amazon for DVRs.
