According to the document below, the iScan VP50 PRO outputs 480p and should work for you. Another option would be a Gefen HDMI to Composite and S-Video Scaler

Thanks for responding. You are correct about the iScan VP50m PRO, it does a superb jog for video to the main system BUT but the Pioneer DVD recorder will only accept SD.
But I finally have found the answer - just feed composite (and laserdiscs are analog composite video) into the DVDR and let it do the processing. The comb filter in it is far superior to that in any ancient LD player.
