I agree. HDMI was completely unnecessary and often dictates how things will be done. Audio signals were passed through coax cables fine and component cables support 1080p for video signals. Some receivers are HDMI pass through only. You want the receiver's DAC to work because only the receiver can send individual audio to each speaker. TV speakers just don't sound like the others. The only thing it is good at is making connections between the source and the TV idiotproof. Ever heard the saying "the more components and connections the more chance for problems?" Lately new DVD and Blu Ray players have very few ways to connect them at all.
