There are a number of posts regarding this, but I am stuck trying to use both my avr and my better 2 channel setup at the same time. I have tried using the passive outs of both a Marantz and Onkyo 5.1 receiver into my stereo pre, and using the rear outputs of the avr. It appears that when the passive is engaged, the receiver goes to two channel (direct) and no output through the avr amp.
The only way I can figure to do this is to run front outputs of both amplifiers through a pair of switching units with two inputs, one output for each channel. I guess I can do this, but it seems like there should be a better way. Any suggestions?
Follow Ups:
The receiver needs to have a preamp out for this to work. If so, you have to have to disable the internal amps. My old 2270 has an RCA jumper to do this. New models usually have a setup option for an external amp.
Your 2 channel preamp also needs an HT setting with a fixed volume, so you can calibrate for 5.1. Mine does it by a certain input setup. You can also do it by putting the volume to a known setting.
It sounds like the output you're using is designed for a signal to a remote room or something. With a preamp output, your 2 channel system would always control the front speakers no matter what setting is on for the receiver.
