Not a Costner fanboy nor a Western fanboy but this one is causing a re-evaluation.

This was a historical narrative (as such) that marched forward using different stories to draw you in. It jumps from location to location with an ensemble cast that may pass or recircle as time passes. Costner himself is in maybe 1/3 of the film. The film has epic proportions and Costner would have it no other way.

This is a film you hate to see end. I wanted it to go on and on.

BPOY material. Awards to accumulate.

Looking at the clips, I was going to pass it, thinking it is another-shoot em-up western, complete with burning Conestoga wagons.

Costner has been pushing this film like beer at a ballgame. In fact he sat in the broadcast booth for an inning at the Negro League Celebration game, hawking it.

scouting locations and building things must have been astronomical.

from its August release. I guess Westerns have lost their appeal to the younger generations. Costner saved a lot of money on casting but got good performances. It's a big-screen film, too bad it didn't have enough appeal.

He's the wrong color and the wrong gender.

They'll dump on this all night and day.

When somebody tries that hard, suspicion arises that the product is suspect.
It could be a great film, but a lot goes into timing and finding a niche.
