Streisand and Madonna. She CAN sing, but that is about it... I am NOT a fan.

I thought it interesting when she said during an interview that no one cared about her singing until she starting taking off her clothes. New York is kind of blasé, so to rise above the background noise takes a special effort, or , it seems, stripping.
Well it's a sad state of affairs but it is often generally true that an artist today and perhaps for the last several decades needs sex appeal or some other shtick to become famous.
Take Eva Cassidy - a great singer no one knew about. The only reason she is known is because she dies young and Sting loved her rendition of Fields of Gold and a UK (Eva is American) station played a song or two and the radio station was inundated with huge numbers of phone calls - that made her famous.
Lady Gaga was a rock singer - her name comes from Radio Gaga - a Queen hit. But if she stuck to singing rock - where would she be - it's not like there is a long list of female rock singers who make any kind of living.
Pop is the best way in but she's not exactly a beauty queen - I think she is pretty but she's not pretty in an 1982 Madonna kind of way or hot in a Shakira kind of way.
So she was smart - she made very VERY artsy kind of videos - Bad Romance is visually impressive and it's such an odd "tainted love" 5 minutes. It's also as catchy as anything Madonna has made so that didn't hurt her https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrO4YZeyl0I
Lady Gaga is more of a chameleon kind of singer which IMO is both a positive and negative trait. Since I like traditional singers like Barbara Streisand and rock singers Stevie Nicks, Pop singers Madonna/Marie Fredrikkson(Roxette) , folk kind of singers Sarah McLachlan, Celtic singers Loreena McKennett, jazz pop singers Sade, operatic singers Renata Tebaldi, wispy singers Ellie Goulding, folktronica synth-pop singers like Aurora, old school singers like Judy Garland, Julie London, Julie Andrews etc.

Couple that with being good to her fans - I like her. I caught her in Vegas several years ago because the tickets were only $99 and the seats were pretty good.
Oh and she covered Julie Andrews well. Personally, I'd rather her sing this kind of music because she CAN actually sing. Leave the pop to the "iffy" singers.
RGA, your favourites list is not that diverse! Maybe it is a partial list.
Talking of Sound of Music, have you read the Arundhati Roy book God of Small Things? You will like it when you delve into the great language and inner meanings. And her take on favourite things.

I think there is enough diversity between the way Sade sounds and the way Loreena McKennitt sounds and their style of music to make the point.
The point was that Gaga can sing metal, pop, rock, jazz, show-tunes, etc.
Since she is very close friends with Tony Bennett - she seems to have taken his advice - to try for a longer lasting career singing music she likes instead of trying to be a pop star (who usually fizzle out after a decade).
Thanks for the reply. Lady Gaga has the freedom to try various formats. She is privileged unlike Whitney or Maria Carey. But her singing with Tony Bennett was not that great.Next she can sing about a big city. Is Philadelphia taken I wonder.

Well I didn't care for her song selection on their duet album and I am sorry to say but Bennett probably needed some auto-tune.
Plus I think a lot of this has been done to death (the songbook) - if you are going to cover a song do something different to it. But since people will complain about screwing with classics - pick other songs.
Lady Gaga is a bit frustrating because I think she's better than the material she is singing. Or she is a jack of all trades and a master of none. I think she is the former but the results have kind of been the latter. She is still young - still has time.
I believe Lady Gaga is a Mezzo Soprano with some contralto and that sort of reminds me more of a Cher than a Mariah or Whitney.
I wonder if the vocal type makes her more or less pleasing to the ear of listeners. And her voice seems to change because listening her cover Judy Garland I had a bit of a double take because I had not heard that sort of vocal from her in the past.
I hardly think it is unique to her and perhaps you are right that her success or whatever other reason has allowed her to shift to other genres - most singers seem to get pigeon-holed into one genre for life. They are a golden goose to the studio. The one good thing from a business perspective is that pop fans will buy the jazz album and that may get these people to explore jazz and that will lead to more sales for other jazz artists.
I am big on entry points - you can get young people into other genres but they often needs some entry into the world. Especially with so many schools cutting music programs to the bone.
