not great performances. The modest script (you've seen this many times before) avoids the major clichés of the genre and actually is the strongest part of the film. I can't say as I cared much about the guy and Maggie's okay but her character is nothing new. In other words, both of them walked a well-worn path, neither one contributing anything new perhaps as a result of the script.
I was entertained to the end, however. Colin Farrell showed that it is harder to appear an entertainer than might be obvious: he was unconvincing as hell.
Duvall contributed nothing at all. Nothing.
Follow Ups:
Maggie's role was underwritten and I'd have to go as far as saying she is miscast. The screenplay just didn't give her an opportunity to show why this woman would fall for an aging, drunken, washed-up country music singer. Even so, her talent kept the love story from becoming a distraction. Check her out in "Secretary."
Jeff Bridges is likable and believable, the rest is a bit ordinary. It was nice to see at the theater for the concert scenes. I liked the slower music at the end especially.
thanks
Phil
Sorry you didn't like it more. I really liked the performances of Jeff and Maggie. Duvall was fine but nothing special. Colin was, well, Colin. As I said previously, I enjoyed the the music and the exteriors. I bought the special edition CD which contains all 23 selections in order of appearance in the film. Recommended.
