A Sunday in Hell
From Gods Wiki:
A Sunday in Hell (original title: En Forårsdag i Helvede) is a 1977 Danish documentary directed by Jørgen Leth. The film is a chronology of the 1976 Paris-Roubaix bicycle race from the perspective of participants, organizers and spectators.
Paris-Roubaix is the most famous and usually the most dramatic of the spring classics. Much of the latter portion is over narrow, cobbled tracks that choke with dust on dry days and become slick and muddy in rain. For the riders it's a challenge to keep going without puncturing or crashing.
The film captures not just the events of the 1976 edition but the atmosphere of a professional race.
Breuninger says: it's about the atmosphere. Grity racing, more simple times, same human agony.
Not for cycling fans only.

a bit of a stretch to call them sport movies but they are about surfing and pleasent viewing
thanks

Beautiful cinematography and a great surf guitar soundtrack-the laserdisc was a demo disc for me back in the day. I'd love to see a blu ray release-the standard DVD is (horrors) pan 'n scan.
About the international competition for unassisted deep diving. Jean Reno.
Share a bowl of grits with someone you love tonight.
PAINTING: The Alchymical Trickster"
geezerrocket,While I'm not a serious sports fan- only a hit and miss follower of car and bicycle racing, there are great movies centered around sports- worthy of watching by even the rabidly sports resistant. Why, "The Bad News Bear" alone,..
But, I can't think of a greater sports movie than "Blazmo's 7 Dreams", directed by Hakiro Takasawa and released in 1955, black and white, 244 minutes. On every level that movies may by judged and by reputation of this transcendent masterwork, I don't understand why this movie is not considered greater than "The Seven Samurai", "Casablanca", and "Citizen Kane".
"Blazmo's 7 Dreams" was Takasawa's first movie following the great success of "The Fourth Element" of 1952 and tells the story of a Samurai warrior Norobodei (Toshiro Mifune) who has a recurring dream that he is the greatest master of Nakashire - a 15th Century martial art related to Whu Theatre that is also a kind of interpretive ice skating. This is very difficult and subtle, and basically involves kicking stones from ice at troops near river and lake banks, but incorporates a lot of symbolic gestures and poses in set sequences. A sensa -Master- of Nakashire was said to be able to kill a warrior within 100 meters of any ice. The Nakashire Sensa sometimes flooded places to make these "launch" points. There was a special person to do this- he also makes the tea for the sensa- flooding the night before a battle called a Koorihakuchi and "Blazmo's 7 Dreamsa" has a wonderfully funny, touching subplot about a Koorihakuchi sort of adopted by Norobodei.
In short, the plot Of Blazmo's 7 Dreams is that the Mifune character Norobodei meets a roming Ronin who is dying but as a last gesture, teaches Norobodei the highest level of the Nakashire Art, "The Seven Ravens". Norobodei excels and at a certain point he is visited by an old friend who tells him of a war between "The Two Eagle Thrones"- the neighbourhood big cheeses- warlords. This friend wants Norobodei to takes the side of one of the Lords and at the same time rescue his of course perfectly beautiful daughter from the other warlord. Norobodei gets into the opposition castle by posing as a gardener and then proceeds to flood the main courtyard of the castle,..
I can't express the strength of this touching story, the fantastic humour of the dream sequences, the superlative sports action beginning to end and the satisfaction of fulfillment from the complex conclusion. Gay choreogrpahers the world over have proclaimed the dance numbers "super-fab". Las Vegas could never attain nor ever dare show the memorable Buyou sokosoko nanbyaku shikima toppuresu oppai shoujo "Dance of the 250 Eager Topless Virgins".
Astounding photography- better than "Touch of Evil", perfect editing, and music. When you see this you'll wish it was twice the 244 minutes!
If you only ever see one more movie in your entire life- let it be "Blazmo's 7 Dreams"
Cheers,Bambi B

For a minute there I thought I'd slept for a month and it was April 1.

Harmonia,
You are obviously as anxious as I, waiting for the long-awaited release of the Blu-ray disc of Blazmo's 7 Dreams which is, as you mentioned, happening on 1 April. This is one reason I posted about Blazmo's 7 Dreams- this has been in the works for nearly 3 years and the fans- cultists really- have been complaining continuously about the wait. Every month it get mention in all the glossy curling magazines.
Though "B7D" is in black and white, I know the spectacular Nakashire scenes will be knocking socks off all over the World. Plus, the revised score is said to be astounding-the last completed work of the renowned composer Uma Daiben who of course knew Koudai Shuin when he wrote the original. Micheal Tilson Thomas conducts the LSO in the new recording.
I've got my advanced order in at Amazon already. I'm even getting five copies in case I want to watch it again!
Cheers,
Bambi B
the original "Bad News Bears,' Brian's Song,' 'Court Martial of Jackie Robinson,' The Deadliest Season,' 'Slap Shot,' Bang the drum Slowly."
Alas, The Damned United played for about 10 minutes in Indianapolis so I missed it. Have to catch it on DVD now.
love the film.
The book, the film & (surprisingly) the tv series are all good.
No, not a car-jacking film starring Sissy Spacek and a young Martin Sheen, but Jack Nicholson's directorial debut, with the usual 70s cast including Karen Black and Bruce Dern. Not that there's anything wrong with that. In the 70s-societal-angst-mold of Rafelson and Ashby, with a college basketball player as it's 'center'. Not a great movie, but has a place in the 'worth seeing' column, so I recommend you take it to the house.

Brewster's Millions
Greased Lightning
Pride of St. Louis
This came out 4 years ago (and has been followed by 2 straight to disc follow ups which I haven' seen).
It's about a young Mexican who is promised a trial for Newcastle and travels half way round the world to find no one know why he's there.
He then works at getting to play.
It's actually pretty good and the screenplay is by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.
Kids will love it if they like soccer and it has enough meat for adults.

If pool (billards) is a sport, then I guess chess is too. Great movie. Stacy.

six soccer -crazed girls in Tehran trying to sneak into a soccer match. Their adventures are funny but with the usual bite of a Panahi-directed film. It's based on an incident that occurred when the director's daughter tried to gain entrance to the usually (in Iran) male world of a soccer match.
Rudo y cursi. from Mexico, about two soccer player that happens to be brothers

Bull Durham
The Rookie
Caddyshack
Pride of the Yankees

Chariots of Fire

Remember the Titans

You had to bring up 61. Damm, I just knew I forgot a great one! When I think of this movie I remember Mickey Mantle telling why he likes girls with small hands. Thats funny, I don't care who you are! I live 50 miles from Fargo ND - Roger's home town. Up here, he's still the single season home run record holder. No steroids, growth hormone, or any other sh&% !! Just Camels and beer, the way the Babe did it. For a coming of age sports movie, I would have to include Vision Quest. Stacy.
Clearly a labor of love for him-everything about that film was authentic, right down to the batting stances of the actors who played Mantle and Maris.
If you haven't read Andy Strasberg's memories of Roger Maris, you'll enjoy this-great story. Andy used to work for my home town team (Padres) and I heard him talk about Maris in a radio interview.
...and the greatest of them all, of course, Raging Bull..although my personal favorite sports movie is...Bull Durham, I LOVE this move. (Tin Cup wishes it was this good).I love sports movies because they allow me to go all sentimental without fear of shame or reprisal :-)
He Got Game is IMO one of Spike Lee's best efforts, with a truly fine use of music and an excellent performance from Denzel Washington. Fat City has a great performance by a young Jeff Bridges, a career best role for Stacy Keach and good showing from Candy Clark (where is she now???). One of John Houstons better films. Let It Ride is a hilarious take on a low level racetracker/gambler played to the hilt by Richard Drefuss in full schlub mode. Pat & Mike is a classic I never tire of. The Basteball Diaries is all but forgotten these days, but it's one of the best movies I know about aspiration, addiction and sports.
The Hustler is just a great movie, period. Gleason and Newman were never better.
I not only adore John Sayles' Eight Men Out, I'm in it! (Somewhere way in the back of the stands.) It was largely shot in my hometown of Indianapolis.
Then there's Breaking Away, which I still find wonderful, and which was made about 50 miles down the road in Bloomington.
I love horses, so I had to include Seabiscuit. Horse movies can be too sweetly icky, but Seabiscuit has some great racing scenes and is beautifully shot. Champions, starring John Hurt, is another good "horse" movie, about the recovery from cancer and triumph of top British jockey Bob Champion and his mount's equally astounding comeback fron serious injury. It's a two hankie movie, but ver well done.
I'm sure there's some others I just can't think of at the moment.
Other sport movies I've enjoyed:
Chariots Of Fire
A League of Their Own
Hoosiers
Major League
Any Given Sunday
Slap Shot
Grand Prix

Glory Road

Friday Night Lights
Dead Solid Perfect
School Ties was actually a, gasp, good Brendan Fraser flick and introduced, IIRC, Matt Damon
Craid T. Nelson has never been a bigger a$$hole than he was n "Moves".
Hadn't thought about Dead Solid Perfect in a long time, great movie.
Kingpin is friggin' hilarious.
Ratings are for shite, but hey, it's definitely not Survisor. Right now its 2009-2010 run is only on Direct Tv but I think NBC is picking this season's reruns up.
Kingpin rules
Old , somewhat fictionalized, but still good.
Karl Malden's performance is close to what Youth Sports parents of today act like.

Leni Riefenstahl? Just askin'.

...and I've never heard it or seen it referred to under any other title.
It's certainly a monumental masterpiece.
Turn in your man card right now!
Baba-Booey to you all!
My top ten would include most of those and add The Natural and Breaking Away.

One of the best 'coming of age' movies.
