after first viewing it, I found it enjoyable, evocative of the period, but minor. But I thought more about it, read some thoughtful commentary, and saw it a 2nd time.
Now I believe it ranks among the Coen brothers best. I believe there is much to be found under the surface.
Follow Ups:
Burn after Reading.
With the exception of their dismal remake of "The Ladykillers", I've found this to be true of all their films.
"Burn After Reading", "The Big Lebowski" and "Intolerable Cruelty" in particular had much more to offer on a second viewing.
Most of their films I've enjoyed first time around had even THAT much more to offer on subsequent viewings.
I'm looking forward to seeing "A Serious Man" - maybe more so the second time!
