Wind River should be a best picture nominee. A terrific film.

And Jeremy Renner should be a best actor contender. A very subtle and nuanced performance in a cast full of such characters. Elizabeth Olsen plays the tenderfoot FBI agent called in on the case. You might best remember her as one of the comic ER docs in the tv series Scrubs. Not much humor for her here, but she's plays her part well. The hoodunit detective story is not overly stacked with fine esoteric clues; just old fashioned follow the trail stuff, with back and side stories to round out people's lives that make this a compelling study of life in this piece of world. There's no Sherlock working here, so it seems very believable. Scenes of grief and pain are not softened. The story follows a couple of murders on the Wind River Arapahoe Indian Reservation in Wyoming, but the mountain scenery belongs to the Wasatch Mountains in Utah. There is one scene where Gannett Peak in WY is identified, but that ain't it. Logistically, its far easier to support a film in Park City Utah than it is in the WY wilderness, so cut slack here if you actually have seen the Windy's. You really need to see this one. You'll pay attention start to finish. My bet is the film and/or Renner get a nomination. If all you've seen of Jeremy Renner is his role in the Avengers or other action movies, this will give you a different take. |
