I'll suggest Dawn of the Dead. Plenty of Savini gore as well as a very funny take on mall culture. I also like Return of the Living Dead. Aside from zombie flicks have a look at Driller Killer and Ms..45, both by Abel Ferrara. Maniac's one of my favorites and until the DVD I hadn't seen it in years. Always liked Joe Spinell who died in '89.
