Saw this last week.I had browsed through the commentary here and while it alerted me to some of the things that had bothered others I was very quickly in 'suspended disbelief' anyway.
Now I am one of those who was very worried that any film could not be up to the book. Even that animated version came after I had read it.
NB I first read the three volumes in one sitting, taking a day off work as I had read through the night. The most unput-downable book ever for me. I have just about everything JRR wrote, and re-read much of it regularly.
Despite the small plot changes eg aAagorn nearly killed by the warg riders, I though it was just great.
AND I didn't mind the CGI Gollum, his split conversations were very moving. The moral dilemnas in the story were very well done IMO.
We also hired the DVD of FoTR last night and it confirmed my view that he quality has not slipped. So, the decision to make it all in one go was right.
We will eventualloy buy the director's cut when all 3 are available.
