The Day the Earth Stood Still came out in 1950 and would be standard Academy format. Note: Although there may be more, the only earlier example of a widescreen film I can think of would be Abel Gance's silent French masterpiece Napoleon, from '27, which employed an experimental three camera/projector process for selected shots that was similar to Cinerama, but the film wasn't entirely shot WS.Cheers,
