There's a quiet dignity and suffering to his character in that movie that are very different from the standard monologue/statement/pronouncement that Lancaster-impersonators use to parody him. Okay, he does pontificate on the penal system near the end, but the rest of the film is remarkable, especially the fallout with his mother.
