...comes from the Etruscan "phersu", meaning mask. The "son" root has nothing to do with "sonus". There's no connection with the Greek "prosopon", which means "face, visage, facial expression" and only in later usage (Cicero's Epistulae, New Testament) came to signify person or personage ("personality").

I'm not sure linguistic philology is in character with "Schmidt", anyway (^_^)
