If you love Almodovar you must see Sex and Lucia by Julio Medem.
This is the second film by this fine Spanish director that I had privilage to see this week. And both films - "Lucia" and "The Lovers of The Arctic Circle" - are simply mesmerizing.
We talked before about Almodovar failing to achieve true greatness. Whan he lacks Medem has, and that is no small achievement.
Sex and Lucia is a contraversial film, make no mistake about it. Sex scenes will turn some people off, but they are there for reason, and what lies under them is far more revealing than the near-X heat of love making.
Try to raise above the simple emotions, and things will suddenly take different shapes. You will see the sheer beauty of this film, the beauty rarely to grace the screen.
You will see definite and almost striking similarities with Talk to Her: same actors, same composer... but all done with much more taste and subtlety. Where Almodovar's touch lacks finesse, Medem shows his incredibly masterful control and the result is two riveting hours you will never forget.
The atmoshpere, the mood, the anticipation and the frustration are all so real, yet the story seems so simple, that you are longing for resolution, and when it doesn't come you don't even feel cheated.
A must, a definite must. But do yourself a favor - see the beauty in the steamy scenes, not porn.
