Ian,I have seen Tampopo a couple of times and is one of my favourite (non-Kurosawa) Japanese movies- and along with "Babbette's Feast" one of my favourite "food" movies. Tampopo is a wonderful combination of Samurai, Clint Eastwood "mysterious stranger parody, and Kung Fu Kid. Not only is it funny and great comment on film, it is so refreshingly upbeat, yet not sentimental.
This was just a wonderful look at the idea of the importnace of self-image, teamwork, and striving for improvement in art.
Memorable: The scene in which the homeless people are comparing vintage wines that they found at the bottom of bottles out behind expensive restaurants? The young Japanese ladies learning how to eat spaghetti? The gangster and girlfriend passing the raw egg? The young executive that does not deferentially order the same French meal as the Big Boss, but is the more informed connoissseur? The "noodle order memorization" scene?
Fantastic!
Cheers,
Bambi B
