I understand that Malk lives in France, so I suspect very strongly that his awful French accent was at least somewhat intentional.Haven't seen the film yet, but your description reminds me of Kevin Kline's kludgey Eye-talian-speak in **I Love You to Death**; those who've seen **A Fish Called Wanda**, on the other hand, were treated to Kline's effortless pronunciation of Italianisms such as "mozzarella", "parmigiana" and -- that old standby -- "Benito Mussolini."
Come to think of it, did Malk affect a French accent in **Dangerous Liaisons**?
