Re: Bob Hope gone....

I had the opportunity to meet him as during the years he was active in doing comedy speials for NBC he did the post production audio at Glen Glenn Sound where I began work in 1977.

My first experience was a chance meeting in the bathroom. I went to the bathroom to wash up when leaving for lunch. Looking towards the urinal a few feet right of the sink I was shocked to see Bob relieving himself. As this was one of my first meetings with someone of legendary status the surprise certainly registered on my face. He said to me "I have to go to you know". Over the next few years I had chance to have several brief conversations with him away from bathrooms. He was a charming unaffected man. Bob always shot and posted those NBC special very very close to airdate to be sure that his jokes were as current as possible. On one occasion we were finishing an 1 1/2 hour special which was built on three reels of 2" quad video tape. Part one had just started airing while part three was being rewound at Glen Glenn. A police escort waited to take the last tape from Hollywood over the hill to NBC Burbank.

Bob was very generous with his time and money. He entertained troops overseas and donated time and money to local charities. When I go to the doctor I go to one of the clinics operated by Motion Picture Health and Welfare. Mine is the Bob Hope Clinic on La Brea in Hollywood. It was built with money he donated. Bob was a wonderful comedian and one of the few who gave back more than he ever took.

Regards

Steve
