The "never ending ending" was a directorial choice that effectively brought to conclusion the trilogy's story arc while closing loose character threads directly correlated in Tolkien's written works; he obviously wanted to remain as true to Tolkien's vision as was humanly possible without compromising the requirements of cinematic adaptation/storytelling. I felt that those "multiple endings" were entirely appropriate and NOT anti-climactic. IMHO, Peter Jackson managed to bring this epic to conclusion as rapidly as possible following Frodo's harrowing albeit ultimately successful sojourn. It's frustrating to see criticism surrounding the use of digital effects in this series, as if that were what LoTR is all about; granted, this film and the prior two probably couldn't have been filmed without extensive use of cutting edge CGI, but it never intruded upon the story or leaves the impression that the viewer is part of an elaborate video game. I'm still amazed that these three fims are as realistic an achievement as they are and have so effectively created the imaginary world envisioned in Tolkien's works.
I'm sorry that you were unable to overcome your prejudice, that the cinema was too loud for you and that you allowed your preconceived notions to influence your final opinion. In short, I think that YOU are utterly wrong. This film was more than "fun" for those willing to suspend disbelief, it was a truly moving experience. Obviously, YMMV, but the distance traveled may be limited by European gas prices! ;^)
