Seeing these movies out of the designed context would be somewhat like getting take out from an expensive restaurant and eating it out of the cartons in a small car with plastic forks and knives.
People understand seeing a sporting event at home is a very different experience from attending the same event in person. Yet it is often assumed the viewing experience is directly interchangeable between home and theatre viewing.
The value of a communal shared experience and the human response it generates is not to be overlooked as a part of the enjoyment found in these movies.
I recently attended a friday night screening of the latest superhero product. The crowd was clearly excited to see the movie, lifting the mood of all, in anticipation of the event.
As the movie played, part of the crowd reacted with glee to fan boy stuff that I wouldn't have noticed myself, others laughed at humor few saw. i shared in all their experiences, just by being there. It's only human nature to want to share in happiness, and enjoyment is the shared goal for the entire crowd, finalized when one buys a ticket.
Much like when you approach a laughing group, you instinctively smile and are curious, wanting to know what is so funny, so you can join in .
if there is enough laughter, you also laugh before you even know what is so funny. it is contagious. The great jim baccus, the cartoon voice of Mr. Magoo and one of the castaways on gilligans island, made a recording that contained only laughter , no words, just a recording of a one man drinking party and his girl. He puts it over so well , you start laughing along, it's just so ridiculous
Everyone knows stuff is more enjoyable in a shared group experience. The movie I saw was product, very good quality product, but still product. The shared group experience, the famous thrill of the crowd , with the movie projected in a big, state of the art high quality house , lifted the experience , actually made the movie a lot of fun, and well worth attending.
I first noticed the effect with old W.CFields movies. I enjoyed them when I first saw the genius humor on TV. seeing the same old bank dick movie in a theatre had the place howling with laughter. internal enjoyment is a far cry from fighting for breath laughter during the same bank robbery car chase.
Judging these super hero moves, designed as a blockbuster must see event for a younger crowd with somewhat limited entertainment options, without considering the joy of a shared group event , is missing a vital part of the understanding needed to fully consider these movies.
