Marketing, of course, has been pushing actors talents in this kind of thing for years. Paul Newman and Robert De Niro both had boxers they trained with praising them, saying the could have been successful boxers. Of course, reflexes and training are only part of it, the ability to take punishment and be unforgiving about giving it are critical. In figure skating, it's jumping that proves difficult, plus the hard-won ability to trace complex figures, perfectly. Needless to say, Robbie ain't got them skills.
Having lived in Oregon during the time of the story, I came away with an understanding of Tonya. It's a class thing. Hard for a non-working class person to "get it."
