as regards story versus art..... seen a few of your comments lamenting the poor state of the "art" in the movie and most of those comments are dead on correct. However, without a good story, I do not know whether, I for one, want to reach into the art. Now the story DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A story in the CONVENTIONAL sense of what constitutes a story at all. I mean to say that the whole concept or plot (even if a bit abstract) has to engage me and how it does that is not something I worry about - a good story remains only a potentially good story if there is bad acting. But if the movie is about a more conventional story which is a bad or silly story - think about it - how many people can sit through and just admire some acting. Art is about expressing something. Trying to laugh when the story would be better if crying were called for would not evoke much of a response from me (even if the actor was great at laughing).
Titanic - dont know whether anyone acted well or not, BUT I HATED THE movie mainly because of the story - I may have gone in with the wrong expectation - did not expect just a love story or something "LIKE" that but even if anyone acted well there I doubt I would be engaged. I was trying to figure out if I could get out of the theatre without knocking all the popcorn eating people (sorry pet peeve -why do people need to eat everywhere here - cars, movies).
BTW, I never feel guilty about liking anything.
Cheers.PS.: about getting emotional at US Passport, I can relate in a different way - I may not get touchy feely or something and I certainly have many problems with intolerant behaviour here BUT I am just elated every time I get in (no visas to all kinds of wild countries that I like to go to wow). People here do not know how lucky they are. I come from a bureaucratic "mixed" economy that one economist called a mixed up economy. Can you guess. Hint - I too know all about planning and 5 yr plans - lot of other hints maybe some to do with spelling unconsiously not changed. Okay, back to drinking wine, enjoying sci-fi and trying to afford a Lotus And planning my next vacation. things that america lets you indulge in.
