Anamorphic DVD's playback fine on a 4:3 set. You just have to set your DVD player to do the downconvert: this does *not* result in any changes to the original aspect ratio of the film. Downconverting might have some artifacts, depending on the DVD player, but a wrong aspect ratio is not an issue.
