I saw the 3rd LOTR movie . . .

New Yeards Eve my wife and I slipped out to the movies. She wanted to see the "Last Samurai". So we went to the nicest theater in our area, the one with the stadium seats that are actually comfortable. Samurai was really pat and obvious. I find Zwick's movies to be a terrible bore. Everything seems over art-directed which makes his heavy handed and plodding direction feel trite and pretentious. Does anybody remember the movie "The Big Picture" directed and written by Christopher Guest? The one where Kevin Bacon is the film student. At the beginning it shows him winning a student film competition and there was one obnoxious student that had made a terribly over-ripe civil war epic. Zwick's movies remind me of that. The guy

After it ended, we were walking out of the theater and we walked past the box that was showing LOTR in 7 minutes. We shared a glance and walked right in. For free? Why not.

I have to say, I was very entertained. yeah, it's too damn long and has far too many endings that just got progressively more sappy until the final one that lingered on the 4 hobbits for what seemed like 90 seconds each. It was nauseating. Gollum was a riot. Once again, he was the best actor in the movie. Many of the human actors suffered from "blue-screen-itis": They have a slightly dazed and confused look on their faces, like they are not looking at what we are. But I tell ya, the battle sequences were stunning. Yes, the FX will be dated in a few years, but right now, it truly is state of the art.

6 hours in a movie theater. Hardcore.
