"That's because the silly sci-fi and archeological flicks are the norm for him. The Color Purple and Schindler's List are the exceptions."

Interesting that Sci-Fi is silly according to you. It is one of the most insightful scientifically and if done right the most poignant historically. Most slack jawed Americans probably don't GET 2001: A Space Oddysey but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a great film.

As for Spielberg - counting his films up I don't see his serious efforts outnumbered:

Schindler's List (Thank god he didn't turn it over to Polanski as he had planned or we would have had the weak willed, less insightful lesser directed, less important, poorer production valued, small time The Pianist).

Saving Private Ryan: On second view it's actually quite smart - too smart with too many deep themes for those not up on military history to grasp. So rather than THINK and get an education - it's written off because people don't like Spielberg. Works for me because I studied the history and understand the government thinking of the time which is why I laugh at moron critics who DON'T GET why the government would send in a team to save one guy. Not only is it plausable it would be implausable for that kind of thing to NOT happen. But you can lead a horse to water but you can't make hime THINK!

Colour Purple: Film gets 11 nominations and Spielberg regretted making it. Not bad for a film you he didn't think he did a good job on - he did despite his doubt. He should have pushed the envelope with rape scene (or even include it), it was a pivotal move that knocks the film backward. But then Eyes Wide shut was an utter Pile of crap and Tarrantino's Dusk till Dawn was crappola and Reservoir Dogs was hardly the last bastion of insightful film making but Tarrantino and Kubrick were not written off yet.

The SugarLand Express - art film and because it is - nobody saw it - a good one as well. No Hollywood ending and no sap.

Amistad - sap tried too hard didn't work - poor casting.

A.I. Sap didn't work

E.T, Jaws, Raiders - Masterpiece, Masterpiece, Masterpiece. All on most everyone's best 100 list for a reason.

Schindler's List - well easuiily and by far the best film on the subject. TO think that Claude Lantzman had 9 hours to tell a worse less insightful - Masterpiece.

Then there is the stuff I'm luke-warm to that people seem to like. Jurassic Park, Close Encounters, Duel, Minority Report.

The Lousy - Hook, 1941.
