An even more evil guy with a permanent mask tied around his head. Rasputin. (Yes, Rasputin!) And... a full moon. Plus, talk about the occult Thule Society (real) and the "Spear of Destiny", which the Roman soldier on duty at Jesus' crucifixion thrust into His side; whoever possessed this spear and understood the powers it served, held the destiny of the world in his hands for good or evil. AND, get this, American troops have landed and are surveying the mystical proceedings; and along with them comes this rumpled professor...
Folks, I already had a grin on my face like a twelve-year-old boy.
Naturally there's lots of CGI (which I hate) but for me it worked marvelously well -- I even felt for the CG characters. And the FX obeyed the laws of physics. I mean, trajectory and timing and momentum considerations, stuff like that which usually disturb me. Watch for when Hellboy gets whipped around by this long tentacle...
Ron Pearlman deserves an Oscar nod at the very least, as the now-government-funded Hellboy.
And laugh? Sometimes I had tears in my eyes (there's lots of real feeling) and sometimes I was scared -- but still laughing!
Hellboy is the greatest yarn I've seen in years, easily outdistancing Pirates of the Caribbean (which I enjoyed too).
Go, while it's still in the theatres.
Oh, yeah, one more thing: It all ends up outside a snowbound European capital. I won't say where, but when you find a certain Igor hanging on your neck... you'll know...
