The Japanese actress in "Last Samurai"

who is she and what other good movies is she in? I was quite taken by her for some reason.
Finally watched the DVD of "Last Samurai," and I agree with the negative comments posted here previously. If a true filmmaker had made it, it could have been a great movie IMO. It's sad that Hollywood decided that the American hero was more spiritual Japanese than real Samurai's, more skilled in the sword than real samurais, able to seduce Japanese women at will, and impossible to kill despite multiple shots with the Getling gun.
