Who ever is showing the movie, owns the distribution rights for the US. That mean that no importer based in the US, is *suposed* to sell the DVDs here. Some still do, and you can still buy them from foreign companies. It happens all the time. Mirimax/Disney is famous for buying the rights to films abroad.
This is why I try to keep tabs on current movies coming out of Asia, because it can be difficult to buy. I had this problem with Shoalin Soccer. Now you can finnaly get the butchered US version, but not the original. Other movies? Hero, Infernal affairs, a few others. That's also why there are different versions of movies-different companies have the rights in different countries.
On the plus side, It will probably be available as R1 soon.
Director's cut? I have the DTS version. Wonderfull movie-it may be the best quality DVD I have out of HK.
