Yes, the criterion DVD is an improvement over thewir laserdisc. It is the granddaddy of all wartime prison movies and features episodes repeated endlessly by its followers. I like the way the language constantly changes between nationalities and also Strohein's magnificent performance. We almost lost this one and it would have been a tragedy of "Greed"-like proportions if we had.
