Well, I grant you the 3 1950s era US movies I mentioned don't convey the grubbiness and smelliness of "pigboat" life like "DB." They are, as far as I can tell otherwise pretty accurate. Run Silent was written by Edward Beach, a submariner during WW2 who later commanded the first US nuclear powered sub, the "Nautilus." I don't know if the screenplay writers of Enemy and Hellcats had similar credentials, but I do know that a book by Adm. Richard (?) Fluckey, the US WW2 sub captain with the highest sunk tonnage (who wasn't KIA) and who was awarded the Cong. Medal of Honor, describes conducting a landing party raid similar to that shown in Hellcats.

Sounds like maybe I'll wait for U-571 to hit video or pay-per-view.
