titles go out of print because Criterion's license to put out that film runs out.Many of the titles, although OOP for Criterion, were subsequently released by the studio that owns the film. Often those later DVD's have the same transfer. Occasionally the Criterion OOP version had an extra (commentary track or something) that the studio version won't have, but also sometimes the later studio version has more bells and whistles than the Criterion OOP version.
